ANDREW HUBERMAN: FROM NERDY SCIENTIST TO KING OF THE INTERNET

How Andrew Huberman came out of nowhere and became one of the most popular men on the internet...

Morning!

I’m currently in Valencia, Spain. If you’ve ever been, fire some recommendations my way - I’m here for a week.

I’m technically meant to be taking some time off, but this doesn’t count as work… right? Right?

Anyway, every so often on the internet, there are certain people that come out of left field and quickly become a household name.

One minute nobody knows them, the next every Tom, Dick, and Harry loves them.

It’s a rare occurrence.

But this is exactly what this person did.

3 years ago, he was just a nerdy professor.

Today:

  • He’s your favourite scientist (by far)

  • He has 500k+ tuning into his podcast every week

  • He had 9M+ die-hard fans across the internet

His name is Andrew Huberman and this is how he grew viral…

Listen to the audio version of this breakdown.

Breaking Down The Strategy

Full transparency, I had never watched 1 second of Andrew Huberman’s content before researching him for this breakdown.

Yet, I still feel like I know everything about him.

He has this omnipresent feeling to him - he’s everywhere I go.

  • My brother tells me about the supplements he takes

  • My mother tells me about his morning routine

  • Even my partner is on the Andrew Huberman train now

He came out of left field and has absolutely taken over the internet.

3 years ago, Huberman was just a nerdy scientist that only a few people even knew about.

Today, he has millions of people idolizing him across the globe.

He’s had arguably one of the biggest “come-ups” of this decade.

But this wasn’t by mistake.

Yes, Andrew is a neuroscientist - and apparently a very good one.

But he’s also a stupidly good marketer.

I spent 8+ hours this week diving down the Andrew Huberman rabbit hole, and it turns out there are 4 key themes that have made Andrew so popular:

1) Role Model Marketing

I think it’s pretty safe to say that Andrew Huberman is an absolute stud.

  • He’s what most men want to look like

  • And he’s what most women want their men to look like

Huberman (Pictured right)

But more importantly, he looks like the epitome of a man who understands health.

He’s jacked, has a chiselled face, and just looks all around like he’s an optimal human being - and this is such an overlooked aspect of why he’s so successful.

This is what I call “Role model marketing”.

Andrew essentially presents himself as everything his target audience wants to be.

They want to be:

  • More intelligent

  • Better looking

  • Healthier

  • Stronger

  • Fitter

And Andrew has all of these things ticked off.

He is the person they want to be, so they listen to his insights so they can be more like him.

Takeaway: The best way to gain credibility is to have the things your target audience desires.

2) Nursery Teaching

Huberman is a legitimate neuroscientist, who has a pretty hefty career.

But you and I aren’t.

To him, we’re just like wild apes running around pretending we know what we’re doing.

Huberman understands this and so he numbs down all of his messaging to talk to us as if we were still in nursery.

He doesn’t explain all of the crazy science jargon, instead, it’s all simple, actionable snippets that anyone can take onboard.

Just think about the 3 core things he’s known for:

  • Morning routine

  • Supplements

  • Daily habits

These are all things LITERALLY ANYONE can action after consuming his content - which is why he’s able to have fans from multiple generations and varying intelligence levels.

It may sound simple, but few scientists before Andrew have actually been able to pull this off.

Takeaway: The message that is simple & actionable is nearly always the best message - at least when it comes to marketing.

3) Consistent Aestetic

Andrew’s brand is built on one main factor - his authority.

He speaks on a field where if you want to garner any attention, people need to see you as an expert.

For Huberman, his background got him to the dance, but it wasn’t going to keep him there.

If he wanted people to listen to him, he had to come across like a scientist every single time people saw him.

So that’s exactly what he does:

  • He’s nearly always pictured wearing a plain black button-up shirt (including every single podcast episode).

  • He sticks to very plain colours across his socials (mainly black & white)

  • He even had his whole podcast studio built before he knew if it would be a success or not.

Why?

Because scientists always have the right equipment and appear like they have their shit together.

And that’s exactly how these things put Andrew across.

Takeaway: Your messaging doesn’t matter if you look like shit. Your appearance drives perception.

4) Narrow Messaging

At this point, Huberman has 9M+ followers across platforms and he can probably talk about whatever he wants and find success.

But he doesn’t.

Rather than attempting to be the next Joe Rogan and have every man and their dog on his podcast, Huberman sticks to his niche - health & wellness.

This is even the same with the sponsors he promotes.

On the MFM podcast, Andrew admitted to turning down millions of $$$ to ensure he wasn’t pushing any products that don’t align with his overall message.

Because of it, he’s become the clear leader of the health movement that is going on right now.

When people think health → They instantly think Huberman.

A priceless correlation to have.

Takeaway: Dominating a niche is ALWAYS better than attempting to dominate everything.

In 2022, Huberman was literally just a nerdy scientist at Stanford.

Now, he’s one of the most influential scientists on the planet - with millions of people taking on his advice.

But no matter how smart he is, I don’t think he’d be even close to where he is today without these 4 things.

My advice: Be more like Huberman.

Right, I’m off to enjoy some Spanish cuisine in the boiling hot Valencia sun. Let me know if you enjoyed this one below.

Until next Sunday.
